1. Q: Should I get a male or female rabbit?
1. A: It really doesn't matter what gender your rabbit is, it all depends on how well you care for him/her, and how often you hadle it. Remeber, all breeds and personalities of rabbits are different. A male will usually "spray" in his cage to mark his territory. Spraying means peeing, while running or jumping at the same time. You could imagine the stink and mess it makes! Females also spray, but not quite as frequently. Some females do become territorial at times, especially during pregnancy.
2. Q: How do I get rid of "spraying?"
2. A: You could try to train your rabbit, although this is a very hard process. If your rabbit is close to a female or male rabbit this could also get him worked up, which also could cause him/ her to spray. Another option, which is always the best for you and the rabbit is neutering/ spaying (see Health and Housing for more info.)
3. Q: Every time I reach into the cage of my rabbit, she grunts. What does this mean?
3. A: Grunting isthe rabbit word for, "BACK OFF." It is her way of tellign you that her cage is her space and if you come any closer she might attack. This habit can be changed. When your rabbit grunts at you, try to reasure her that you mean no harm by using a soothing voice. Just talk to her for a bit. If you are cleaning out her cage, take her out first becasue rabbits often don't like to have their stuff messed with. Try to handle you rabbit more often, and congragulate her when she does something good. You could give her some veggies, like celery or carrots, btu try not to give her too much, to avoid obesity. Another great solution to behaviour issues is also getting them spayed or neutered.
